The instructor (SENSEI), Jerry Hughey (6th Dan), began studying karate in Murfreesboro in 1976, after graduating from MTSU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. In 1977, he accepted a position with FaberCastell and moved to Lewisburg, Tennessee. Today he co-owns MAKAMARK, LLC, a manufacturing company making dry erase whiteboard markers and inks.
He continued studying Wado Ryu under Ray Cross and Don Hendrix until the school closed in 1980. He continued his Wado Ryu training under instructor, Jerry Potts - Columbia dojo, where he received his 1st Dan. In 1984, Hughey began teaching in Ardmore, Alabama and in 1986 moved his school to Pulaski. In 2000, he received his 5th dan under the late, Sensei Cecil T. Patterson. And in 2010 during ceramonies at the U.S. Eastern Wado Federation sponsored karate tournament he was promoted to Roku Dan.
A native of Giles county he is also active in raising funds for St. Judes Children's Hospital, running a cattle farm, and teaching evening classes.
